Tinker:
Amazingly the young men playing football for LSU now look much bigger and faster than they have ever looked before. Can this picture of shear size and strength be unique to this LSU college football team, or is it much like this everywhere else.
The competition down on the LSU tiger stadium college football field these day is a fierce battle between some of the biggest young men that I have ever seen. These highly trained young men playing college football today would simply push aside some of the best of the best college football stars from yesterday.
It would be no contest, between 6-5 340 vs 6-3 280 at best. That is simply the plain facts? These over 6-4 320 pound guys are everywhere, nothing is like it once was in college football, nothing except the ball and the football field.
Bigger, stronger, faster, and more of them, that is today college football teams reality all over this country. College football has become a very dangerous game ladies and gentlemen.
Without their shield and sword the roman gladiator would have been pushover against these guys today.
So sound the trumpets golden band from tiger land, and let the game begin.

LSU spring: Who helped himself most?
April, 23, 2013
By
Gary Laney | ESPN.com
BATON ROUGE, La. -- LSU finished its spring drills Saturday, capping 15 practices spread out over six weeks, and while a lot of the big names performed as expected, other names emerged.
Zach Mettenberger is solidly entrenched at quarterback, as is Jeremy Hill at running back. Linebacker Lamin Barrow has stepped into a leadership role on defense, as has defensive tackle Anthony Johnson.
But who took the biggest steps in the spring? Let's look at five.

LSU poised for a monster recruiting class
April, 22, 2013
By
Chris Low | ESPN.com
The ESPN recruiting folks released their early class rankings last week
for the 2014 class, and five SEC teams were in the top 10.
Florida was No. 2, followed by Texas A&M at No. 3, LSU at No. 4, Tennessee at No. 7 and Ole Miss at No. 9.
Again, it's extremely early in the process, but LSU is in prime position to have a monster recruiting class in 2014.
The Tigers already have commitments from five ESPN 150 prospects, which is more than any other school in the SEC at this point. Florida has four and Alabama and Texas A&M three apiece.
But here's the best news for LSU: Seven of the top 40 prospects in the ESPN 150 are from the state of Louisiana, including the No. 1 overall prospect -- running back Leonard Fournette of New Orleans.
Talk about a bumper crop from one state. Not even California, Florida or Texas has seven top 40 players in the initial release of the 2014 ESPN 150.
What's more, all seven of the Louisiana prospects in the top 40 of the ESPN 150 have yet to commit, meaning the Tigers could really clean up if they keep most of the top players in-state at home this year.
All told, there are 11 players from the state of Louisiana in the 2014 ESPN 150.
LSU has recruited well outside L.A, but I've long had this feeling that they'll miss on more instate players this year.

Well, you hope we miss.

It
is absurd how much football talent comes out of Louisiana. Mississippi
also has a high number per capita. I saw a report a couple years ago
that showed that Louisiana and Mississippi had twice as many pro
football players per 100,000 residents than even Florida or Texas.
Georgia was actually 3rd, but a distant 3rd. Combine that with the fact
that LSU does not have any real in state competition for players, and
they should be decent every year.

Bama,
A&M, and LSU are all going to have outstanding classes. I think LSU
and A&M will benefit from both recruiting TX and LA.
Bama is the traditional leader and LSU will benefit from great in-state talent, but if A&M beats Bama in September things are going to get interesting.

What's
funny is that everyone thinks of LSU as being the most talented team in
the league and underachieving with all that talent. The truth is over
the last six years Alabama has led the nation in recruiting, and Florida
is #2. In the SEC, LSU is #3 in recruiting over that period. Bammers
like to foster the "reputation" LSU has for stockpiling talent, because
it helps deflect from the times Bama has lost to LSU. Bama has lost to
LSU twice in the last three years. While Bama had all those t...more

Yeah,
and how many national championships has LSU won during the timespan?
Zero. Alabama has 3. I notice you conveniently forget about the 21-0
curb stomping that LSU suffered in the biggest of the meetings. Alabama
has won 4 of the past 6 games with LSU, in case you missed it.
LSU fans lead the nation in trying so desperately to compare themselves to Alabama. How many times in the last five years has LSU ended up ranked ahead of the Tide?

NCs but only 1 of them earned. It's not hard to win them when you get a
second chance (over a more deserving team, no less) and the easiest
schedule in the SEC for back to back seasons.

Why
did you only do 3 years? Why not 2 where Alabama is 2-1? Why not 4
years where Alabama is 3-2? Why not 5 years where Alabama is 4-2? I
prefer the 5 years because that is when Saban actually got in there and
had a full recruiting season.

Who
cares who LSU's quarterback was in a relatively meaningless 2010 game
(neither team beat Auburn, and thus neither team was going to win the
SEC) or the 2011 game, which essentially counted for nothing. No one
remembers those games over the ***BCS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME***, the
one in which LSU couldn't cross MIDFIELD.

LSU’s 2014 recruiting hits higher gear this weekend
The fax machine at the LSU football office still hasn’t cooled off
from receiving letters of intent on National Signing Day last Wednesday,
but the Tigers staff is hard at work laying the foundation for the
highly anticipated Class of 2014.
To that end, LSU is expected to welcome more than 80 prospects to campus Saturday for one of its junior day sessions, among them some of the top talent for 2014 from Louisiana and several neighboring states.
Leading the way is St. Augustine running back Leonard Fournette (6-foot-1, 232 pounds). The state’s No. 1 prospect for 2014, he is ranked No. 2 nationally on 24/7 Sports’ Top 247 for 2014 and No. 3 on the Rivals 250.
Other top in-state prospects expected to be in attendance are West Monroe offensive tackle Cameron Robinson (6-6, 325); University High offensive guard Garrett Brumfield (6-3, 270); Monroe Neville defensive back Laurence Jones (6-2, 208); Plaquemine defensive end Davon Godchaux (6-4, 243); and defensive end Gerald Willis (6-3, 260) and wide receiver Devante “Speedy” Noil (5-10, 170) from Karr.
LSU has four commitments for 2014: Brother Martin offensive guard Will Clapp (6-4, 270), Westlake tight end Jacory Washington (6-5, 211), athlete Devin Voorhies (6-1, 185) of Woodville (Miss.) Wilkinson County and Houston Alief Taylor cornerback Chris Hardeman (5-9, 180).
Washington, Voorhies and Hardeman are expected to attend the junior day. Also expected in is Beaumont (Texas) Ozen cornerback Tony Brown (6-1, 180).
Brown, ranked No. 13 nationally by Rivals and No. 15 by 24/7 Sports, is considered an early lean to LSU.
His sister, Beloved, is expected to sign with the LSU women’s track and field program.
LSU’s early recruiting efforts have the Tigers ranked No. 6 nationally for 2014 by 24/7 Sports.

Dandy Don's LSU Sports Report
It was great hearing from many of you yesterday about the LSU Spring Football Game. A few of you who didn't have a chance to see the Tigers this spring asked whether a replay of the game would be broadcast on television, but the answer is no (at least not that I know of.) However, I did find these brief video highlights of the spring game produced by Jaques Doucet of WAFB that I think you will enjoy. And while you're at it, you might want to check out this video (by Tiger Rag) of Coach Les Miles's post-game press conference if you haven't seen it already. There's a funny moment starting at about the 10:05 mark when one of the reporters phone rings and Coach Les Miles picks it up and talks to the caller. Classic Les Miles!
After seeing the football team several times this spring, I'm feeling cautiously optimistic about seeing a significantly improved offense, and I'll list the reasons why.

Dandy Don's LSU Sports Report
In football news, yesterday I wrote a bit about the Tigers’ offense and mentioned that I'd say more about the defense in today’s report. After I first reported the score of the Spring Game as being 37-0, a lot of you asked me where the defense was. What’s important to remember is that the game was essentially a battle between the No. 1s (White) and the No. 2s (Purple), and the fact that the first team defense held the second team offense scoreless is not that alarming to me. With that said, there are some areas of concern with the defense, namely at defensive end and middle linebacker. Jermauria Rasco, who saw a good bit of action last year, is expected to start at defensive end but did not play in the Spring Game due to a shoulder injury. The starting end position opposite of Rasco is still uncertain, but Danielle Hunter showed Saturday that he’s a solid option there. Hunter led the Tigers with eight tackles and two sacks. Jordan Allen also showed why he's in contention for the role as he recorded four tackles and an assisted sack. A few newcomers will have a say in the matter when they report in the fall, namely Frank Herron, Tashawn Bower, Michael Patterson, Lewis Neal and maybe Kendall Beckwith. Beckwith played quarterback, defensive end and linebacker at East Feliciana High and dominated wherever he played. It will be interesting to see how he's used at LSU. Replacing Kevin Minter at middle linebacker is my biggest concern for this year's Tiger team. After the Spring Game, Coach Miles confirmed that the position will likely be filled by either junior D.J. Welter or senior Lamin Barrow. Welter got the start there for the White team, but at 6'0", 226 some say he might lack the physicality for the position. Barrow seems a little better suited for the middle at 6'2", 232, but is reportedly more comfortable playing on the outside.
While on the subject of football, yesterday USAToday published these attendance figures for all the SEC spring games.
Auburn - 83,401
Alabama - 78,315
Tennessee - 61,706
Arkansas - 51,088
Kentucky - 50,831
Texas A&M - 45,212
Georgia - 45,113
S. Carolina - 35,218
LSU - 28,000
Ole Miss - 28,000
Miss State - 21,000
Missouri - 18,384
Vanderbilt - 14,000
Florida - 10,000
You'll notice LSU’s attendance figure were extremely low compared to many teams in the league. This is due in large part to the format that LSU uses, which is much more practice-like and much less game-like. I went back and looked at LSU's number from last year's game and was surprised to see that this year's attendance was about 5,000 less. With all the excitement of Cam Cameron coming to LSU, and with the beautiful weather we had, I'm a little surprised that the numbers were down.
In closing, I’d like to remind you all that LSU’s Tiger Tour is in full swing now and you can see the schedule of stops here. The first stop was last night in Shreveport/Bosier and Coaches Les Miles and Johnny Jones were the guest speakers. If you attended last night’s event, please drop me a line and let me know what was said. Tonight the tour will stop in Monroe and tomorrow night in Alexandria. Monday it will be in my hometown of Lafayette and I hope to make it there. The tour will conclude with stops in Lake Charles, Houston, Jackson, Baton Rouge and New Orleans.Reader comments: Scott, here's an article to share with your readers.
