The ghost of Detroit Michigan

Bankrupt Detroit Receives Less U.S. Aid Than Colombia

By Chris Christoff & John McCormick - Jul 30, 2013 9:42 PM ET

President Barack Obama proposed giving Colombia about $323 million in aid next year, mostly to combat drug trafficking and violence. Detroit, with an 81 percent higher homicide rate, will get $108.2 million.

As Michigan’s largest city entered a record $18 billion municipal bankruptcy on July 18, the message from Congress and the White House was that no new money would be forthcoming.

Detroit’s implosion has rekindled debate over how and whether a federal government that managed to provide more than $700 billion in aid to banks and automakers in 2008 and 2009 should help cities with unsustainable retirement debt, hollowed-out tax bases and diminished services that endanger the public. From 1990 to 2010, the percentage of the U.S. population that lives in urban areas grew to 81 percent from 75 percent, according to Census Bureau figures.

“The consequences for the failure of a whole set of great American cities is not limited to the people who live in those places,” said U.S. Representative Dan Kildee, a 54-year-old Democrat from nearby Flint, another former auto-industry center. What If Obama Can't Lead?

Why the president's defenders are wrong when they argue Obama is impotent.

By

July 31, 2013 | 6:00 a.m.

(AP)
Two New York Times reporters recently posited for President Obama this grim scenario: Low growth, high unemployment, and growing income inequality become "the new normal" in the nation he leads. "Do you worry," the journalists asked him, "that that could end up being your legacy simply because of the obstruction ... and the gridlock that doesn't seem to end?"

Obama's reply was telling. "I think if I'm arguing for entirely different policies and Congress ends up pursuing policies that I think don't make sense and we get a bad result," he said, "it's hard to argue that'd be my legacy."

Actually, it's hard to argue that it wouldn't be his legacy. History judges U.S. presidents based upon what they did and did not accomplish. The obstinacy of their rivals and the severity of their circumstances is little mitigation. Great presidents overcome great hurdles.

In Obama's case, the modern GOP is an obstructionist, rudderless party often held hostage by extremists. So … get over it. His response to The New York Times is another illustration that Obama and his liberal allies have a limited—and limiting—definition of presidential leadership.

I call it the White Flag Syndrome.

Their argument is best expressed by Ezra Klein of The Washington Post, who posted a thoughtful rebuttal in May to journalists like me who demand more leadership from the White House.

"The problems of American politics today are not overly complicated, or even overly controversial. They're just hard to fix.

O'REILLY: KILLING HISTORY

July 31, 2013

Does anyone read anymore? I mean, besides tweets from Anthony Weiner?

During his otherwise excellent commentaries on race in America, Bill O'Reilly, host of the No. 1 cable news show, claimed on Tuesday night that the one person who tried to help African-Americans more than any other was ... Robert F. Kennedy!

No one laughed. I guess that's what they're teaching these days at the John F. Kennedy School of Government. (I can't wait to hear how Ted Kennedy helped eradicate drunk driving!)

According to O'Reilly's Bizarro-World history, Bobby Kennedy was "the guy who was really concerned about African-Americans" and "who really DID SOMETHING. ... He went in with the federal government and he cleaned out the rat's nest that was abusing African-Americans in the South."

Although this myth has been polished to perfection by the Kennedy PR machine (requiring all Kennedy stories to illustrate either courage or adorableness), it is simply a fact that helping blacks was not the Democrats' priority. Even the ones who wanted to, such as Bobby and John Kennedy, couldn't risk upsetting the segregationists, more than 90 percent of whom were Democratic.

The job of actually enforcing civil rights and desegregating Southern schools fell to Presidents Dwight Eisenhower and Richard Nixon.

Five years after Eisenhower had shown the Democrats how its done by sending federal troops to desegregate Central High School in Little Rock, Ark., President Kennedy and brother Bobby still dragged their feet in helping James Meredith enter the University of Mississippi.

On Feb. 7, 1961, Meredith wrote a beautiful letter to the Department of Justice, describing his inability to enroll at the University of Mississippi, He wrote:

"Whenever I attempt to reason logically about this matter, it grieves me deeply to realize that an individual, especially an American, the citizen of a free democratic nation, has to clamor with such procedures in order to try to gain just a small amount of his civil and human rights, and even after suffering the embarrassments and personal humiliation of this procedure, there still seems little hope of success." MSNBC: Too Much Opinion and Not Enough News?

MSNBC: Too Much Opinion and Not Enough News? July 31, 2013 | 03:05PM PT

Focus on commentary and advocacy may be dampening viewership

Senior TV Editor @bristei

The NBCUniversal outlet has used that slogan since 2010 to portray itself not as the buttoned-down news source it was when it was a joint venture of NBCU and Microsoft, but as a community for progressive discussion that trumps humdrum reportage with advocacy.

Say what you will about the ongoing collapse of the Fourth Estate, but the partisan approach, in which Al Sharpton and others actively push for change, has worked, bringing ratings increases and celebrity status for primetime personalities like Rachel Maddow.

In recent weeks, however, MSNBC ratings have slipped, and leaning forward may be a cause. MSNBC markets itself as a place for discussion and community. Yet when bombs explode at the Boston Marathon or unrest shatters Egypt, viewers want information first, and analysis — even solutions — later, if at all.

For the week ended July 7, MSNBC’s primetime programming captured 14% to 15% fewer viewers between the ages of 25 and 54 — the demographic coveted by sponsors of news programming — than a year earlier, according to Nielsen. In May, MSNBC , which usually plays second only to Fox News, saw its ratings fall behind those of CNN and HLN, too.

MSNBC’s top executive, Phil Griffin, thinks the shift is short-lived. “There has been an inordinate amount of big, breaking news, and that is, honestly, when CNN does well. It’s pure muscle memory,” he said. MSNBC’s performance is bound to suffer in comparison with that of 2012, he added, when a presidential election drew political junkies and casual viewers alike.

Sounds plausible, but could MSNBC’s recent ebb suggest something more seriously amiss? Je rey McCall, author of “Viewer Discretion Advised: Taking Control of Mass Media Infl uence,” believes so, saying that the newsie generated its initial momentum by riding the optimism of President Obama’s rise to prominence.

“MSNBC’s problems might be more than just a hiccup,” McCall maintained. “Now that the Obama administration’s fortunes have apparently declined with various challenges like NSA, IRS and Benghazi, previously (enthusiastic) news consumers on the left might find it hard to keep tuned in.”

To be sure, there’s nothing wrong with opinion-making. But MSNBC offers an awful lot of it. An analysis by Pew Research of 108 hours of cable-news programming during three days in November and December found opinion and commentary overwhelmed straight news on MSNBC by 85% to 15%. Fox News content included 55% opinion and commentary and 45% factual reporting, Pew said, while CNN content consisted of 46% opinion and commentary and 54% factual reporting.

No matter what their mix, both Fox News and CNN have for years pitched themselves as places to go when viewers need details, not discussion, an angle MSNBC does not take.

MSNBC made a strategic decision to essentially rebrand itself as the policy yin to Fox News’ yang, explained Mark Jurkowitz, associate director at the Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism. “So far this year, (it has) probably seen some of the pitfalls of that rebranding.”

Griffin remains steadfast in the transparency of MSNBC’s mission, and believes there’s little reason to change. The cabler will focus on getting past political malaise, he said. “There is a sense that America doesn’t do big things. We do, in some ways as much as ever. We have to find it.” Look for the network to dabble in digital community-building with a new website in the fall.

Dispensing “just the facts” is no longer enough for most people. Just ask your local newspaper publisher. Still, when big stories do arise, you need newsgathering muscle, not gum flapping. Activist Sharpton can’t do what Brian Williams does, and the more Maddow and Chris Matthews pontifi cate, the farther they get from being able to present news events in an objective fashion. Who is the face of MSNBC should terrorism cripple a major American city?

MSNBC has woven a grand tapestry. But it should never forget that there are times when a news network simply has to stick to its knitting.

Michelle Malkin’s Must-See Takedown of ‘Race Charlatan’ Al Sharpton: He ‘Has Blood on His Hands’

Jul. 31, 2013 11:35pm

Michelle Malkins Must See Takedown of Race Charlatan Al Sharpton (Fox News)

Conservative firebrand Michelle Malkin went off on Al Sharpton on Wednesday’s “Hannity,” dismissing him as a “race charlatan” and “demagogue” who is known only for spreading “racial divisiveness and hate.”

“Al Sharpton has blood on his hands,” Malkin began. “He’s ruined lives. He’s been one of the worst purveyors of racial divisiveness and hate in my lifetime. How can you expect an ounce of honor from a man who doesn’t have it?”

She went on to call Sharpton a “shakedown artist” who hates “cops,” “whites,” “Jews” and “who has stoked his rent-a-mob to murder Yankel Rosenbaum, to destroy the life of Steven Pagones when he lied about Tawana Brawley.”

Malkin also warned conservatives not to get into the “snake pit” and attempt to have an honest discussion about race with people like Sharpton. She said conservatives have been far too “nice” thus far.

“You can’t with somebody who is a demagogue and is evil,” she added.

Later in the program, host Sean Hannity played a compilation of Sharpton’s most vitriolic and hateful moments, which Malkin described as “chilling.”

“In an era where we are supposed to take Martin Luther King’s words to heart about judging people by the content of their character, not the color of their skin, all this man has done is enrich himself by fomenting more racial division,” Malkin reacted.

She added that it’s amazing Sharpton, a “race charlatan,” thinks he “can lose weight, put pancake makeup on, and all of a sudden he’s respectable.”

What does the team look like Joe?

Tinker:

We went to the 1971 LSU vs Notre Dame football game Saturday night in Tiger Stadium, hoping that our LSU football team that year could play a good enough football game to beat the highly touted golden domers.

Head LSU football coach Charlie McClendon, known as "cholly mac" has a very good defense in 1971 and LSU quarterback was the very talented Bert Jones. All the LSU fan taking their seats in tiger stadium that night felt confident that if the tigers could hold Notre Dame to a low score, then LSU could be victorious

Low and behold LSU offense passes for a quick TD and we all braced to see if our hopes to hold Notre Dame strong offense was only a purple and gold LSU daydream.

Down to inside LSU five yard line, Notre Dame slammed trying to score a touchdown with one running play after another, right up LSU gut. Fourth and goal from the one yard line. No! said the LSU stout defensive line
taking over the football after stuffing the golden domers short of the LSU goal line.

Again and again Notre Dame managed to get inside LSU 10 yard line only to die there over and over because LSU 1971 defense was very stout, and real indeed.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=41t1E8DOFKY

Now we are about to go back to tiger stadium looking for the signs, will the guys be strong enough, tough inside where it counts. Can they, will they be victorious for the devoted LSU purple and gold fans everywhere?

Tigers ranked No. 13 in preseason coaches poll

SEC lands five teams in the top 10, four of which are on LSU’s schedule
By LUKE JOHNSON
Tiger Rag Assistant Editor

Coaches around the country ranked LSU the No. 13 team in the nation in the USA Today preseason coaches poll, which was released Thursday morning.

The Tigers found themselves as one of six Southeastern Conference football teams ranked in the poll. The SEC, which has won the last seven BCS National Championships, claimed half of the top 10 spots.

Alabama (1), Georgia (5), Texas A&M (6), South Carolina (7) and Florida (10) were all ranked ahead of the Tigers in the poll. LSU plays all of the teams ranked ahead of it in the preseason poll except South Carolina.

LSU’s season-opening opponent, TCU, checked in at No. 20.

Dandy Don's LSU Sports Report

In just three days, Coach Miles and his staff will welcome the LSU football team to preseason camp, and from what I've heard the only player from the 2013 signing class who hasn’t yet been declared eligible is Rashard Robinson. As I've mentioned before, Robinson had to take a couple of summer courses to qualify and I've heard that at this point he is just waiting on the clearinghouse to accept a half credit that he earned by taking an online course. As soon as I hear more I'll let you know. I'm still optimistic that he will receive clearance in time to participate at some point during preseason camp.

With only 30 days until Game Day, today we’ll continue our Jersey Countdown by remembering a special former Tiger who wore No. 30, but first I want to mention four players on the current roster who wear the number. Yes, you read that right... four Tigers currently wear the number 30, and they’re all kickers. The four are redshirt freshmen Colby Delahoussaye and Trent Domingue, junior James Hairston, and freshman Alex Kjellsten. As I've mentioned before, field goal kicking is one of my biggest concerns with this year's team, simply because none of these four have kicked a single field goal as a Tiger. LSU has been so fortunate over the last few years to have solid field goal kicking from Drew Alleman (2011-12) and All-American Josh Jasper (2008-10) that a lot of us take this position for granted, but at this point it's unclear who will earn the placekicking duties this season and how effective he will be. Last year, due to LSU's struggles in the red-zone and on third-down conversions, LSU attempted a lot of field goals. To be exact, LSU attempted 29 field goals, which was tied for the 8th most in all of college football. I don’t expect LSU to have to settle for three as often this year under the direction of new offensive coordinator Cam Cameron, but placekicking will certainly continue to be a very important duty for the Tigers.

Now for today's jersey countdown feature, let’s remember a former Tiger great who wore number 30 as a safety and return specialist, Sammy Grezaffi. Grezaffi was an exceptional prep player at Pointe CoupĂ©e High School where he wore No. 20. In fact, he was so exceptional that the school retired his jersey number when he graduated. When Grezaffi arrived at LSU, No. 20 was unavailable (had been retired after Billy Cannon), so he received No. 30 which was his future wife’s (and future LSU Golden Girl’s) basketball number from Melville High School. Grezaffi played at LSU from 1965-’67 as a safety and kick/punt returner, and in 1967 he made All-SEC after having one of the most remarkable seasons returning kicks in Tiger history. During that incredible season, Grezaffi set or tied three school records, including the first 100-yard kickoff return in school history against Tennessee on October 28. Since then, Eric Martin is the only Tiger to have returned a kick-off for 100-yards, and that was against Kentucky back in 1981. Morris Claiborne almost tied the record last year but missed it by one yard with a 99-yard kickoff return against West Virginia. Grezaffi also tied a school record for most punt returns in a single game with seven, and for the year Grezaffi set a school record with 41 punt returns for 369 yards. His yardage total currently ranks ninth in LSU history. After his days at LSU, Grezaffi was drafted in the seventh round of the 1968 NFL draft by the Kansas City Chiefs, but did not make the team. Sadly, Grezaffi passed away last year at the age of 65 in his hometown of New Roads.

In closing, I've got some good news and some bad news about a couple of special former Tigers. First the bad: According to this report, Jacoby Jones suffered a season-ending knee injury last weekend during a collision at home plate. Jones was just 15 games into his career with the Pirates' Class A affiliate Jamestown Jammers and was off to a great start, batting .311. I know I speak for all of you when I wish Jones a quick and full recovery. Now the good news about a former Tiger: According to this article, quarterback Matt Flynn is doing great in preseason camp for the Oakland Raiders and is on track to win the starting role. As most of you know, back in April Flynn was traded from the Seahawks to the Raiders where he was brought in to compete with Tyler Wilson and Terrelle Pryor for the starting quarterback position. According to reports, Flynn has been the most impressive of the three QBs so far in camp.

IMO after Kragthorpe was diagnosed where was Les going to find an OC on such short notice. He took the only guy on his staff that had experience as an OC and gave Coach Stud a shot. After many games of seeing 8 and sometimes 9 men in the box and a failure to execute over the top. Add in a 1st time starter in Mett (that they kept the cuffs on) having a passing game that comes out of a middle school playbook. Les took his lumps for 2 years going 23-4 with a sec title and bcs title runner up.

The 2013 recruiting class was really geared towards defense because of all the early departures to the NFL. The offensive guys Les got was aboard with LSU regardless who was calling plays for him. This 2014 class is one that Les really needs to get LSU back on top where they belong.

Enter Cam Cameron. The man that has proven that he has the chest to move the ball, score in the redzone but most importantly coach qbs. Les already had Cam on board before the 2012 season began. Les waited at the right time to announce Cam, there was no reason to say something before NSD.

Harris, Fournette, Robinson, Noil, Dupree & Quinn are among the best in the country at there respective positions. When it comes to players of this caliber you have to prove your offense will be solid. With Cam coming in and installing his offense that I am more than sure will put up the numbers to sway all these guys to stay home and play for LSU. Everything is on this 2014 class which has been called the best in Louisiana EVER!!!!! LSU must land all these guys in my opinion.

Right now LSU has lost a couple battles 2011 & 2012 season, but the war is not over. The 2013 class was the 1st piece of the puzzle, Cam was the 2nd piece and the 2014 class will be the final piece to LSU taking back what's theirs the crown of the SEC and the CFB world. So all Tiger fans just chill and let Coach miles do his thing.
