Tinker
Anyone born in the very year LSU won the 1958 College Football National Championship with Paul Dietzel and Billy Cannon, must be special. Because Steele is a man born under the LSU college football morning star, and who was to be destined to coach at the same football program where Billy Cannon used his natural running ability to run the LSU college football program right into the big time bright light on Broadway. A 1958 undefeated untied 10 game college football season, and the National Championship.
Up until then LSU were respected for a rich college football tradition but never shared the big stage in the bright neon light of a sports media who kept looking for the next glamorous Notre Dame great coach like Knute Rockne, Frank Leahy, and Michigan head coach Bo Schembechler vs Ohio State Woody Hayes.
The great college football stars up until that year were
always from somewhere else, like the great RB Red Grange.

By: Mark R. Gould
"Red Grange (1903-91), who was football’s first
superstar, remains popular with fans of the game. In 2008, he was selected as
the greatest college football player of all time by ESPN, and in 2011, he was
named the Greatest Big Ten Icon by the Big Ten Network. Grange first
gained his fame at the University of Illinois, and, in the professional
ranks, with the Chicago Bears."
------
LSU had NFL stars too like the talented running back from
Warren Easton New Orleans to LSU, Stephen "Steve" W. Van Buren
who was a professional football halfback who played for the Philadelphia Eagles
of the National Football League from 1944–1951,"
And Hall of fame great LSU QB Y.A.Tittle.
"Y.A. Tittle
played 17 seasons of pro football. He played three seasons with the Baltimore
Colts of the All-America Football Conference (1947-1949) and one with the Colts
in the National Football League (1950).
He played 10 seasons with the San Francisco 49ers and a
final four seasons with the New York Giants. Although Tittle had excellent
personal statistics while playing for the Colts and 49ers, the one thing that
eluded him was a championship."
