To the LSU tigers everywhere:
Tinker Town: "Be yourself. You ate the food that grew from the river sand on the Mississippi River delta plain . Your Daddy and Mother worked hard to pay for the ham in your ham sandwich. Some of you are the very children from the farmers who raised the pigs from the slope in the hog pen, that they feed to sell. Some of you came from the dirt and dust that covered your clothes when your Mother dressed you when you were living in the inner city streets. So be yourself, whoever you are. You are now apart of the LSU football team. Fight with the fire that you feel the most, in the way you were born. You are from your family history living in this our homeland when and where everyone is getting ready to go to a football game in LSU tiger stadium. The LSU football players have been working very hard together on this football team. Still, If you want to win, you must prove it. Be yourself and fight with all your might. You are from the bayou, and swamps, the red clay from the north, and the sharp broken glass from our inner city streets. You are from far and wide. You know who you are, so be yourselves. You have come together to wear the colors becoming the glory of our LSU fighting tiger football team. Your LSU tiger stadium fans are waiting to see you play football. You are the very best of who we are, so give them hell, and don't let the other team win. Fight!!!"

Can LSU make another run to BCS title game?

You can make a strong argument that LSU's 2011 regular season was the most impressive in school history.
The Tigers defeated eight
teams during the season that were in the Top 20 when they faced them,
and they defeated Oregon, Alabama and Arkansas that were in the Top 5 at
that time.
But the beat
down by Alabama in the BCS national championship game has lingered
around the program for almost eight months, and every player wants to
get that bitter taste of defeat out of his mouth.Read more...http://www.houmatoday. com/article/20120824/ OPINION01/120829741?p=all&tc= pgall

How good does Zach Mettenberger need to be for LSU to win a championship?
Jon @JonSDS
LSU has one thing on the brain entering 2012: win an SEC Championship and get back to the national championship. And they think they finally have the quarterback and surrounding cast to do just that.
Now, I’ll admit, this league is known for its physical defenses and downhill power running games more so than quarterback play, historically.
Mettenberger takes over the reigns of the Tigers’ offense, and the anticipation is very high for him to give the Tigers a downfield passing game that has been noticeably absent for the last several years – four years, to be exact – since Matt Flynn was the quarterback.
Now, there’s a whole lot more that goes into being a quarterback than just producing on the stat sheet. We all know that. You can have all the talent in the world, but it does no good if the players around you can’t reciprocate that talent.
The Tigers are predicted by most to win the SEC and play for all the marbles again.Read more...http://www. saturdaydownsouth.com/2012/ zach-mettenberger-lsu- quarterback/

College football expert previews the season with TR Radio

Lyn Scarbrough of Lindy’s Magazine joined Jeff Palermo and Richard Fischer on Tiger Rag Radio Tuesday night.
The college football expert broke down some of the teams in the SEC’s Eastern and Western Divisions.
Then, he told us if the loss of Tyrann Mathieu affects LSU in his preseason poll as he had the Bayou Bengals No. 1 before the Honey Badger’s dismissal.
Here are a couple excerpts from our conversation with Lyn, and below that you can find a link to the full audio clip.
“Lets go to the East first. Georgia, to me, is the prohibitive favorite because of the schedule. Of course they’re really, really good. They’re got the great skill people. Aaron Murray is outstanding. Their defense is so solid. They’ve got Bacarri Rambo, Jarvis Jones and Alec Ogeltree, probably the three best defensive players on any one team in the conference, particularly now that Honey Badger is not going to be playing for LSU. And then they’ve got the easiest schedule maybe that I ever remember a Southeastern Conference team having… I like Florida as a dark horse team. I still think they’re probably a year away, but they’ve been moving in the right direction… I hate to look ridiculous, but a team I think you need to look for is Vanderbilt. Listen, last year they won seven ball games but they lost [close] to Georgia, Arkansas, Florida and overtime to Tennessee.” hear and read more...http://www.tigerrag.

LSU football great Tommy Casanova ‘uneasy’ over honor

But when he does and happens to look up at the façade of Tiger Stadium’s east upper deck, where his name and No. 37 are enshrined, LSU’s only three-time All-American has trouble believing he’s deserving of such an honor.
“I’m still uneasy about it,” Casanova said here Saturday between appearances and autograph signings at the inaugural SEC Beachfest, a kickoff celebration of the upcoming college football season. “Billy Cannon, Johnny Robinson, Jerry Stovall, those are the guys I grew up following.
“To have my name up there with Billy Cannon is intimidating to me,” he said.
Casanova played cornerback for LSU from 1969-71 before going on to six years with the Cincinnati Bengals (1972-77). He maintains an ophthalmology practice in his hometown of Crowley.
Saban wants change
Nick Saban said he wants to see BCS teams like his Alabama Crimson Tide and former employers like LSU and Michigan State play schedules comprised strictly of other BCS-level programs, approximately “the top 60 or 70” teams in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS).The purpose of this would be to put teams on a fairer competitive balance in terms of trying to advance into college football’s new playoff system, which begins in 2014.
“If someone is playing a schedule that’s not as tough as yours and you lose a game, certainly two, and they go undefeated, then they’re going to be playing for the national championship,” Saban said.
Saban also would like to play more SEC games to ensure each schools’ players have a shot to play everyone else in the conference during a four-year college career.
“I don’t think players should come to school at Alabama or Auburn or LSU and not get a chance to play all the teams in the SEC,” he said. Read more...http://theadvocate.com/

Steve Van Buren passes away
Pro Football Hall of Famer and LSU legend dies at 91
By RICHARD FISCHER
Tiger Rag Assistant Editor
The LSU football team will take the practice field with heavy hearts this afternoon as the Tiger family has lost one of its own - legendary LSU luminary Steve Van Buren.
The Pro Football Hall of Famer passed in Lancaster, Pa. Thursday. He was 91 years old.
Van Buren played for the Tigers in the early 40s. He was used primarily as a blocking back until his senior season, and then as soon as he took the ball, his career took off. He led the nation in points and touchdowns in his final season.
He went on to play for the Philadelphia Eagles for eight years after being their first-round pick in 1944. He led the NFL in rushing four times and finished with 5,860 career yards and 77 career touchdowns.
Van Buren was part of the Eagles’ 1948 and 1949 NFL championship teams. He won the rushing title in both of those seasons.
He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame and is one of three former Tigers to earn that distinction. Y.A. Tittle and Jim Taylor are the others.
Van Buren will be missed by Tiger Nation.

I first heard about Pro Hall of Fame football star Steve Van Buren from my Fathers friend when I was much younger back in the 1960s. My father friend helped recruit Steve Van Buren to play football at LSU. He played football for the LSU tigers in 1944. Van Buren parents dies in La Ceiba, Honduras, when he was 10, moving to Louisiana where he was raised by his grandparents. He played high school football at Warren Easton High School in New Orleans. One of the football games truly great running backs. He really should be in the LSU Hall of Fame?

Please write to LSU athletics@lsu.edu to ask them to honor Ebert Van Buren in the Hall of Fame. They keep pushing his induction back. He is 87 years old and we (his family) want him to be honored this year!
Steve Van Buren great All-American Football player at LSU, died today at 91 years old in Pennsylvania. He was an NFL hall of famer. Steve & his brother, Ebert (my Uncle) moved to N.O. from Brit
ish Hoduras. Steve & Ebert Van Buren were the first brothers to be selected in the first round of the NFL draft until the Manning brothers. Steve & Ebert to this day, are the only brothers’ to become starter
s in the NFL in their first year as Philadelphia Eagles. Dr. Ebert Van Buren (87), who has 5 children and lives in Monroe, LA. Ebert was an army veteran of WWII, received 3 purple hearts and bronze metal honor. He was also captain of LSU, All American but is still NOT in LSU Hall of Fame. Let’s Honor the Van Buren Brothers by having Ebert join Steve as a member of LSU Hall of Fame this year. Please write in to LSU. We can search our country land and sea far and wide knocking on doors talking to the popular crowd. Seeking good company. All along the best company that we could have ever know seems to drops into our life like a lucky star from outer space. Making us just lucky to simply be there then. The true value of the people like Steve & Ebert Van Buren who played their college football at LSU, going on in their lifetime to achieve a successful pro career, is what I like to appreciate about human virtues the most. Thanking God to simply know them then and now. What is more fulfilling then doing a great job at what you are working at. What could be more fitting then having Steve & Ebert Van Buren in the LSU Hall of Fame. What is the LSU chain of command waiting on?
